I know exactly what happened to cause the error message for me: My computer went to sleep halfway through downloading the blockchain (closed “ungracefully”).
monerod crashes and the .bat file I created doesn’t open. I don’t see any bitmonero.log. My computer does not have Program Data; only Program Files.
I tried creating the salvage file and that immediately crashes too. I’m not a computer science major, but I followed the instructions exactly so I’m baffled.
I just wish I knew before that letting my computer go to sleep could cost me a lot of money. The only thing I can think of to do now is just uninstall and delete everything and start over with the seed words.

I’m running the Monero GUI wallet on Linux Mint, blockchain got corrupted when it froze up completely earlier today and I had to perform a hard reset. This happened while the Monero wallet was updating the blockchain. I will now try connecting to a local node instead….I hate these “core” wallets, used to run the bitcoin core wallet, same problem, was so happy when I found electrum. All I use now.

Though for HODLing I still have the GUI wallet linked up to my Ledger, but I don’t touch that often.
